Tatai relates to the maintenance of documentation in a culturally acceptable way, i.e. by acknowledging Maori models of practice and mental health related Maori terminology.

From a European perspective, this becomes an extension of the Te Reo competency, described elsewhere.

The clinician needs to be aware of terminology used in the context of mental health, and incorporate Maori cultural perspective and advice with regards to diagnostic interpretation and therapeutic planning, such as provided by Kaumatua (high ranking elders) and Tohunga (traditional medical practitioners).
